When Hernan Cortes arrived in 1530, Acapulco was an Indian village where the center for the construction of the galleons was established, which converted Acapulco into an important commercial center when the route between the Philippines and Mexico was established.
The maritime route was the only access to the port, which is the reason the Spaniards constructed the Fort of San Diego, to protect the city from pirates, like Sir Frances Drake.
Later, the Fort was surrounded by the troops of the insurgents, commanded by General Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon. In 1818 the Spaniards left taking with them the prosperous commerce they had generated.
