The Sierra de Manantlán Biosphere Reserve is located a little over 200 km southwest of Guadalajara. This is a mountainous area with a wide variety of flora consisting of endemic plants and another two thousand species that can be found in the pine and oak forests, the mesophyll mountain forest, the low-density jungle and the thorny underbrush in this Reserve. The closest towns are Autlán de Navarro, Ahuacapán and Minatitlán, in the state of Colima.

More than 139,000 hectares of the rugged Sierra de Manantlán are protected areas. This reserve is covered in oak, pine, and mountain mesophyll forests and medium- and low-density jungle that is inhabited by birds, mammals. Of particular interest is the rare species of perennial corn plant that grows here; this species of corn is in danger of extinction.
